In our series spotlighting this year’s ClimateLaunchpad Austria cohort, we turn to AeroVia – a team rethinking how we harness wind power in urban environments. With a new approach to vertical wind turbines, they aim to complement photovoltaic systems and help close critical energy gaps in the winter months. 


We spoke with the AeroVia team to learn more about their mission, their challenges, and their vision for a more resilient energy future.

Who are you, and what does your startup do?

AeroVia: We are a growing team in the energy sector trying to establish a new market for wind energy. We started as a team of two and are now growing to four people. Combining our expertise in electrical and mechanical design as well as sustainable practices we strive to create the new vertical wind turbine that can be used as an addition to photovoltaic systems. Coming from different backgrounds we hope to create a diverse team that covers all the necessary aspects for the development and creation of this idea. 


What inspired your idea? 

AeroVia: Over the past years many experts we have talked to indicated that we need something new, something else to accomplish the energy transition towards renewable energy. With this thought in mind we joined the Sustainability Challenge and started working on the idea of creating vertical wind turbines for the urban and suburban area. 


What problem are you solving? 

AeroVia: Did you know that in winter photovoltaic systems are generating 80 % less energy while the demand is growing by 70 %? This gap in the energy must be closed and by installing newly developed vertical wind turbines we contribute to the solution. The goal is to place on every newly installed photovoltaic system our product to close the energy gap in the winter.

What have been your biggest challenges and what have you learned? 

AeroVia: Speaking with experts and sustainability enthusiasts we recognize that two of the biggest problems for wind turbines are safety and planning. By integrating the pain points into the development of the wind turbine we are minimizing the risk and creating possibilities to easily plan and install the turbines. 


Any advice for other founders in sustainability? 

AeroVia: Yes, many! But most importantly speak out and speak often about your idea. Create friction and strive to explore the unknown. By speaking with experts, peers, family members and colleagues you can verify your idea and get instant feedback. And then integrate the feedback!
